Welcome to UCLA Department of Applied LinguisticsIn the 2011 National Research Council's (NRC) assessment of U.S. PhD programs, which was revised from the NRC results published in the fall of 2010, the UCLA Department of Applied Linguistics ranked in the top 5% among all the programs in the field of linguistics. According to NRC's definition, the field of linguistics consists of programs in Applied Linguistics, Cognitive Science, Language and Communication Disorders, Linguistics, Modern Languages, Second Language Acquisition, and others. The Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics program is one of three UCLA Humanities doctoral programs that rank third or higher in their respective fields in the nation (the other two programs are History of Archaeology and Musicology).
