Welcome to UCLA Department of Applied Linguistics

Program Summary 

The Department of Applied Linguistics provides distinguished colleagues from all over the world with the opportunity to study with the Department's renown faculty and to take advantage of a myriad of resources available at one of the United States' top public research institutions.

Visitors in the Department of Applied Linguistics are generally classified in one of three categories:

• Visiting Graduate Researchers - students who are pursuing a terminal graduate degree at an institution other than UCLA. 
• Visiting Researchers - visitors who have completed a terminal M.A. (or equivalent degree) program, and are currently teaching at an institution of higher education.
• Visiting Scholars - visitors who have earned a PhD (or equivalent degree) and hold faculty appointments comparable to those of UCLA faculty at their home institutions.

Benefits

• A faculty sponsor, who serves as the primary mentor during the visit
• The opportunity to observe faculty during instruction, and audit courses in the department (or other departments, with instructor permission)
• Free wireless internet access while on campus
• Library access, transportation discounts, and other privileges as a UCLA BruinCard holder
• A DS-2019 request for the visitor to obtain a J visa, which the Department will process on the visitor's behalf
• Shared office space may be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Application Process

Those who are interested in coming to UCLA as a visiting scholar in the Department MUST complete the Visiting Scholars Program Application form (an updated version will be available here soon).

Submission of this application does NOT guarantee an invitation to study at UCLA. Please note that additional applications may be required, depending on degree and/or employment status.

Applicants who are selected for the Program will be notified directly by the Department.
